Description

The purpose of this module is to provide the student with an opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become a lifelong personal and professional learner and to have an understanding of research and its relevance to nursing practice. This module is delivered through a combination of lectures, optional computer skills labs and a group project facilitated by a lecturer.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the importance of professional development and lifelong learning in nursing as a research based profession.
2. Understand the concepts of research and it’s relevance to nursing practice.
3. Demonstrate the basics of Information Technology (IT) in accessing information, communicating and processing documents.
4. Develop skills in the use of the library, accessing databases and identifying the sources of information that contribute to nursing knowledge.
5. Understand how to apply the conventions of academic writing including referencing skills, effective study skills and habits to promote lifelong personal and professional development.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Nursing as a research based profession
An introduction to research and its relevance and application to nursing practice.

Academic writing
The conventions of academic writing and referencing will be addressed.

Information technology
The acquisition of IT skills in accessing information, communicating and processing documents, accessing sources of nursing knowledge.

Lifelong learning
Gain insight into individual learning style and understand how to apply effective study skills and habits to promote lifelong learning both professionally and personally.
