Description

This module sets the level B1-B1.1 from the Common European Framework of Reference as its minimum exit level. As an Intermediate Spanish Language module, it aims to foster students' interest in and curiosity for the language by raising language awareness and developing students' competence in Spanish through analysis of Spanish verbs and tenses and the Subjunctive mood. The module's focus on topical social, cultural and political themes exposes students to a variety of text types, registers, media and viewpoints and consolidates productive, receptive, interactive and intercultural skills. The module builds learners' confidence in the accurate use of specific linguistic features and also assists learners in critical reflection, the effective setting of learning goals, planning of learning, learner autonomy and time management.

Learning Outcomes

1. Produce cohesive texts (creative, factual, formal, informal etc.) and oral responses in Spanish on relevant social, cultural and political themes with accurate use of Spanish grammar and theme-specific vocabulary.
2. Engage with texts from a variety of different contexts dealing with social, cultural and polititcal issues in contemporary Spain and Latin America.
3. Demonstrate an ability to employ correctly the present and past tenses and present subjunctive.
4. Demonstrate (inter-)cultural awareness with regard to conventions and norms in the target culture(s).
5. Describe and appraise his/her language learning strategies, language awareness and degree of progression in the study of the Spanish language.
6. Give a reasonably fluent oral description on a variety of topics covered during the course.
