Learning Outcomes 1. Discuss the principles of justice by reference to established philosophical perspectives. 2. Identify the principal claims associated with the 'capabilities approach' in relation to freedom, justice and quality of life. 3. Explore the relevance of the 'capabilities approach' to action on health at individual, interpersonal and collective levels. 4. Evaluate the idea of 'a politics for the public good' and how this is relevant to health. 5. Deliberate upon what it personally means to live a good life: a life of valued 'beings' and 'doings.' 6. Learning Activities Principles of justiceWe examine perspectives on justice by reference to utilitarian, Kantian, libertarian, liberal and communitarian positions.The capabilities approachWe explore the seminal works of Sen and Nussbaum in founding the capabilities approach and a perspective upon justice, freedom and assessments of quality of life.Health, capabilities and justiceWe consider how the capabilities approach relates to matters of health policy and action.A politics for the common goodDrawing on Aristotle, Sandel and Nussbaum, we explore the idea of "a politics for the common good" and how this relates to health matters.Experiential workshopsWe deliberate upon personal meanings of a good life as well as formulate goals for capability development and valued functionings. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
