Description

The module introduces the student to a range of texts for translation, with a view to providing a basic understanding of general translation practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Translate a range of texts from French to English e.g. texts from literature, journalism, websites, advertisements.
2. Identify issues of register and text type etc. as they relate to the translation of texts.
3. Source and utilise appropriate background documentation of relevance to the task of translation.
4. Make good use of lexicographical resources.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Texts/topics to be covered may include
Poetry/songs/fairytales/ short stories; Tourist brochures/information; Journalistic texts: short news bulletins, article summaries, advertisements, film and book reviews etc. Relevant materials for translation drawn from textbooks, journals, newspapers, information booklets, Web pages, etc., will be used. Assessment: Examination: 100% Texts for translation will be between approx. 200-250 words in length followed by questions on the translation task. N.B. Monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, thesauri and student glossaries (printed or handwritten) are permitted.
