Description

Objectives: To introduce students to the basic principles of linguistic theory and description; to provide a basic introduction to the sounds and grammatical structures of English; to assist students in applying their formal linguistic knowledge to other languages; to provide students with a basis to take further language study in applied areas of linguistics. To introduce students to some key concepts of applied linguistics.

Learning Outcomes

1. Provide a basic morphemic and syntactic analysis of English.
2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the morphological and syntactic structure of other languages.
3. Analyse and describe semantic and pragmatic features of various languages.
4. Read and write simple English sentences using the phonetic alphabet.
5. Explain some key concepts of applied linguistics.
