Learning Outcomes 1. Identify and describe some of the key issues that shaped contemporary Spanish society. 2. Comment on the impact of these issues on specific groups in Spanish society. 3. Indicative Content and
Learning Activities Indicative Content, Part 1The course provides an introduction to the history and culture of Spain in the 20th century. It surveys key episodes in 20th century history, including the Spanish Civil War and the early years of the dictatorship so that students are aware of the importance of this period. Social and cultural change since the 1960s will be studied with particular reference to Spanish identity and regionalism; gender and sexuality; education; and the transformation of Spain from a country of net emigration to a country of net immigration in the mid-1990s.Indicative Content, Part 2In the second part of the course, students will study a number of literary texts including short stories, poetry (selected poems by Antonio Machado), extracts from two novels and a study of the novel Los santos inocentes. In addition to standing as accomplished works in themselves, a number of the texts to be studied help illustrate issues that have shaped society in in the 20th century as studied in the first part of the course. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
