Description

The aim of the module is to introduce the students to the necessary technical and creative skills required to produce original video material for multimedia use.

Learning Outcomes

1. Working in a small team be able to originate and prepare a multimedia related, digital video proposal.
2. Originate, shoot and record a short interview, paying particular attention to audio quality, framing and composition.
3. Organise, develop and produce a five to seven minute video project on an agreed topic.
4. Compile the project into a logically edited sequence of events, including all necessary post-production work.
5. Generate a short report, which reflects on the production process, explaining reasons for decisions made and recommending changes based on lessons learnt. Include any academic or audio/visual references that influenced the production process [use of the Harvard Referencing System].

Independent Study85Students are required to engage in independent video production practice throughout the semester; to update and familiarise themselves with all the requisite software applications and tools, and to review suitable exemplar video projects both online and via mainstream media.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Weekly Breakdown
All content is detailed on a week-by-week basis, and is available for students to view within Loop (Moodle). N.B. the following is indicative only, and may change to reflect pedagogical considerations due to new developments in hardware, software, class sizes, or other considerations deemed necessary for the successful fulfilment of the module outcomes. Week 1: Introduction to module, inc. examples of prior student work within a variety of categories e.g. mini-documentary, interviews, drama, music video etc. Week 2: Camcorder familiarisation and class exercise. Week 3: Introduction to the Non-Linear Editing application environment. Week 4: Framing and Composition; Class exercise. Week 5: Three-Point Lighting. Week 6: Class Exercise - Shoot & Edit. Week 7: First exercise due (Reading Week). Week 8: Workshop - various technical topics e.g. file management within the NLE, editing procedures etc. Week 9. Colour Correction. Week 10: Camera Support Tutorials e.g. use of jibs/sliders. Week 11: Introduction to advanced camcorder techniques, including optional cinematic considerations for final/thesis projects. Will depend on class requirements. Week 12: Final post-production work on projects.

General Note.
As per 'Full-time Workload' description, students will be expected to continue their laboratory work with their own research and self-taught tutorial materials in order to increase their understanding and competencies within the various software and hardware environments.
