Learning Outcomes

1. Describe and evaluate the key physiological and metabolic adaptations that occur in response to exercise training including: pulmonary system, cardiovascular system, neuromuscular system and neuroendocrine system.
2. Explain the fundamental principles of energy transfer and demonstrate the process of measurement of human energy exergy expenditure at rest and during exercise.
3. Explain the cellular and biochemical adaptations to exercise training.
4. Explain the neuromuscular adaptations to resistance training.
5. Describe the physiological limitations to performance during different activities.
6. Evaluate the key physiological changes associated with detraining and overtraining.
7. Explain how growth and the aging process influence physiological function and performance across the life cycle.
8. Outline how different environmental factors such as heat, cold, altitude and diving influence physiological function and athletic performance.
