Description The module analyses the key physiological and metabolic adptations in response to acute and chronic exercise. Students will evaluate the critical changes that occur to the various physiological systems at rest and during single and repeated bouts of exercise training. By adopting an integrated approach, students will implement and evaluate different measurement techniques used to assess the physiological and metabolic responses to exercise training. The module will also evaluate and integrate the various physiological systems and mechanisms that account for training adaptations to various exercise modes, populations and sporting disciplines as well as different environments.
Learning Outcomes 1. Describe and evaluate the key physiological and metabolic adaptations that occur in response to exercise training including: pulmonary system, cardiovascular system, neuromuscular system and neuroendocrine system. 2. Explain the fundamental principles of energy transfer and demonstrate the process of measurement of human energy exergy expenditure at rest and during exercise. 3. Explain the cellular and biochemical adaptations to exercise training. 4. Explain the neuromuscular adaptations to resistance training. 5. Describe the physiological limitations to performance during different activities. 6. Evaluate the key physiological changes associated with detraining and overtraining. 7. Explain how growth and the aging process influence physiological function and performance across the life cycle. 8. Outline how different environmental factors such as heat, cold, altitude and diving influence physiological function and athletic performance.
