Description

The first half of this module will introduce organometallic chemistry, and cover aspects such as; bonding to low oxidation state metals, various coordination modes for ligands in organometallic compounds, in addition to the coordination of C-C multiple bonds & polyene type ligands. Reaction types for organometallic compounds, will be discussed in detail and their relevance to catalytic cycles. The second half of this module will introduce aspects of polymer chemistry. This will include synthetic mechanisms like step-growths and chain polymerisation, reaction kinetics as well as application examples of the most important classes of polymers, i.e. polyesters, polyamides and polyacrylates. The module will further introduce basic principles of polymer characterisation and polymer physics.

1. Predict the stability of organometallic compounds
2. To suggest plausible mechanisms of catalytic cycles based on organometallic compounds
3. Know reaction types for organometallic compounds
4. Know the differences between and examples of the most important polymerisation reactions
5. Know basic polymer properties and be able to calculate polymer molecular weights

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Organometallic compounds
Nature of bonding to low oxidation state metals. Ligands in organotransition metal chemistry (eg CO or hydrides). Coordination of C-C multiple bonds & polyene ligands. Reaction types for organometallic compounds. Synthesis and application of organo compounds of group 1, 2, 13 & 14. Industrial catalytic cycles based on organometallic compounds.

Polymer preparation
brief overview

Polymer characterisation
molecular weight distribution, determination of molecular weight, thermal properties, instrumental methods to determine thermal properties. Conducting polymers.
