Description

To give future managers and personnel specialists information needed to choose efficient tools for selection and assessment;train future personnel specialist and human resource specialist in the use, development and assessment of tests and other techniques used for selection and recruitment, internal and external. This module will enable students to discern the critical developments in the area of selection and assessment; to cull the fads from the methods of rigour. Tools are assessed for their validity, reliability and practical value. Students are made familiar with tests to evaluate these tools. Macro-developments and how to access information on such trends will also be detailed.

1. Explain the key elements of the recruitment and selection process
2. Assess the validity, reliability and practical utility of key recruitment and selection techniques
3. Apply course concepts to address specific organisational recruitment needs
4. Communicate recruitment and selection solutions in a professional and competent manner

Ethical and Professional Issues in Selection Methodological Issues The Criterion Issue Job Analysis - a review of models Selection Tools and Techniques-from 'gut instinct' to assessment centres Staffing contemporary and flexible Organisations

Context
Importance of recruitment and selection. Overview of key theoretical perspectives and contemporary trends including examination of evidence from Ireland and organisational case analysis.

War for talent
Critical review of literature surrounding the war for talent. Includes examination of its foundation, assumptions and questioning of its contemporary relevance

Human Resource Planning
Forecasting future demand for staff. Discussion of the merits and limitations of planning for organisations

Recruitment
Overview of key modes and channels of recruitment, including debate about how the internet has changed the recruitment and selection landscape

Selection Techniques 1
Discussion of the dominance of the classic trio- application forms, CVs and interviews, including evaluation of their validity and reliability

Selection Techniques 2
Overview of more sophisticated selection techniques including psychometric testing and assessment centres. Debate about the best means to evaluate techniques and their role in predicting future performance on the job.
