Description

Pitched at intermediate level and taught through the target language, this module aims to foster students’ interest in and curiosity for the German language. It focuses on developing students’ competence in German, in terms of grammar, structural knowledge and vocabulary among other aspects. The module explores social and cultural themes specific to German-speaking cultures within a global context and exposes students to a variety of text types, registers and media. It consolidates productive and receptive language skills and also focuses on deepening (inter)cultural knowledge. The module moreover assists learners in engaging in critical reflection on topics discussed as well as their own language-learning.

Learning Outcomes

1. Produce cohesive texts (creative and factual) on a selection of social and cultural themes relating to German-speaking cultures within a global context, demonstrating accurate use of specific grammatical structures and theme-specific vocabulary.
2. Understand a variety of intermediate-level text-types (both written and audio) dealing with social and cultural issues.
3. Demonstrate (inter-)cultural awareness with regard to some of the conventions and norms in the target culture(s).
4. Source reliable and appropriate information from a range of different target-language sources, and reflect critically on topics discussed.
