Description This course offers an introduction, through literature and film and their socio-historical contexts, to German society since the end of the Nazi era. It also contributes to the development of comprehension and reading skills in German. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Identify key issues and points in the development of German society from Stunde Null to the present day; 2. Recognize how literature and film have contributed to German cultural and political debates; 3. Analyse the language and key themes of German literary and filmic texts. 4. Indicative Content and
Learning Activities SyllabusThis module will focus on the development of reading skills and expansion of vocabulary, using German texts and film. The class will discuss a selection of short literary texts and/or a film illustrating debates and issues which have marked the development of postwar Germany: the legacy of World War II, the division into two states, the economic miracle and affluent society, and the process and effects of reunification. Students will also be introduced to key terms linked to significant developments in recent German history.
