Description The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the application of critical thinking to topics in the domain of Japanese culture and society. They will develop their knowledge of essential aspects of Japanese history and contemporary Japanese society, and will acquire knowledge of the importance of cultural values when coming to an understanding of Japanese society. Through participation in classroom discussions, students will deepen their awareness of the differences between Japanese and Irish society. The module will equip students to achieve a fuller understanding of cross-cultural issues in the broadest sense. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Describe and analyse essential aspects of Japanese history and contemporary Japanese society, with reference to core cultural values. 2. Conduct research into a chosen area of interest on a prescribed Japan-related topic. 3. Show evidence of intercultural awareness in social situations involving Japanese speakers. 4. Indicative Content and
Learning Activities LecturesHistorical development of Japanese culture, demonstrating the extent to which contemporary culture is founded on earlier cultural activity, forms and production. The Japanese awareness of history, in a context of a highly modernised society. The tensions which arise in society from this tension, and applicability of lessons learned from this situation to other countries following a similar developmental path. The status of cultural values in Japanese life, including in business. The derivation of Japanese popular cultural production from traditional cultural forms. Notably, the use of traditional storytelling resources in the creation of anime and films. The debt Japanese literary writers owe to traditional Japanese cultural and social values. The role of literature and art in conserving and promoting Japanese cultural values and in propagating them to a foreign readership and audience.Audio visual presentationsAudiovisual support materials, including Japanese films and television documentary material, will be used.Classroom discussionsClassroom discussions in Japanese focusing on themes introduced by lecturers, drawn from the lectures. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
