Description The purpose of this module is to introduce students to Japanese literature and film and to bring students to a deeper understanding of its literary and cultural value as well as the media format particular to Japanese literature and film. The literary texts and films are introduced in their original language and in translation as appropriate. The module prepares students to develop their analytical skills by using Japanese literary texts and films as primary data to identify underlying cultural values and principles. Students will work individually and as a group, on a range of selected literary texts and films over the duration of the module. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. To describe and explain aspects of Japanese literature and film 2. To describe and explain the way literature and film is presented through a particular medium 3. To analyse literary texts and/or films with reference to context and background of the particular work. 4. To show an awareness of the range of literary and media texts in contemporary and traditional Japanese culture. 5. Learning Activities Indicative Content and Learning ActivitiesThe module introduces those texts especially significant throughout the history of Japanese literature (including some works of Lady Murasaki, Natsume Soseki, Dazai Osamu) while providing some background information for a deeper understanding of the literary works and films. Students are expected to read the texts before class, further analyze and discuss the texts in class, and complete homework (if specified) and all assignments. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
