Description The module is designed to introduce students to theoretical, practical and commercial aspects of audiovisual translation with the focus on technical, linguistic and cultural perspectives. The students will also gain hands-on practical experience using subtitling software. Students are expected to attend lectures and practical lab sessions and will engage in group projects supervised by the module coordinator. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the main types of AVT currently in use in the television, DVD and film industries. 2. Demonstrate basic interlingual and intralingual subtitling skills using dedicated subtitle software. 3. Provide informed criticism of existing audiovisual translation practices. 4. Explain implications of recent developments in audiovisual translation. 5. Work cooperatively in small groups on projects that require theoretical research as well as analytical and practical skills. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Indicative Content and
Learning Activities Topics to be covered include1. General introduction to module outline, AV translation, bibliography, assessment etc. 2. History of AVT esp. in Europe. 3. AVT and minority languages within the EU (Case study- Irish language broadcasting). 4. Dubbing versus Subtitling 5. Types of revoicing, e.g. voice-over, narration, lip-synch dubbing etc. 6. Types of subtitling, e.g. Teletext, live subtitling etc. 7. Choices and constraints, e.g. cost, programme genre, time, audience profile etc. 8. Pedagogical applications of ST, e.g. for language learning. 9. New developments in AVT/accessibility issues. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
