Description

In Module Three, students work on projects designed to develop their fine art skills in drawing, paint and colour, mixed media collage, ceramics and technology. Drawing on their imagination, life experience and current issues, with reference to the work of artists, historical and contemporary, students are encouraged to experiment and express their ideas visually in their own unique style. Students have a choice of visits to art galleries, exhibitions and community art projects. Students study art education theory and classroom practice relating to the primary art curriculum and plan an art project for use in primary school.

Learning Outcomes

1. Experiment and create art with confidence using a range of media and techniques while demonstrating an understanding of the fundamental principles and practices of fine art processes.
2. With reference to historical and contemporary works of art., respond insightfully to artworks, considering both technical and affective aspects, and communicate an awareness of the multiple ways in which the visual arts have a role in making meaning for the individual and for society.
3. Demonstrate and record (e.g. in a sketchbook) how ideas take shape and are expressed visually from preparatory drawings to final art pieces.
4. Incorporate the use of a wide range of digital media in creating, documenting and in teaching art.
5. With reference to art education literature, demonstrate understanding, knowledge, critical reflection and analysis of the role of art in education in the planning of an Art Project for the primary classroom.
6. Direct and manage their own independent learning in practical and written projects related to art-making and art education.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Indicative Content
This module offers students the opportunity to work on a choice of projects. They will enhance their artistic skills in drawing, paint and colour, collage, clay, mixed media and digital technology. They will gain an appreciation of the work of artists thus contributing to a deeper understanding of the art process and its potential for thematic exploration and expression. Drawing on their art-making, their teaching experience and a range of art education literature students will plan an art project for a primary class and be enabled to teach art with confidence.

Introduction to course: Choice of Animated Picture Book or Claymation
• Looking at samples of animated picture books and Claymation projects (created by professional artists and former students); • Experimenting with various media: Plasticine, pen and inks, water colour pencils, collage; • Range of short art exercises e.g. self-portraits in mixed media, drawing from observation.

Drawing
• Experimenting with variety of drawing media: pencil, conté, charcoal etc; • Drawing from imagination, observation; • Picture book illustration: Character invention, setting etc; • Drawings of set designs, props for claymation.

Paint and Colour
• Exploring colour using various media; • Working with colour tones; • Painting from observation; • Developing composition in book illustration, set design painting.

Graphic design
• Design layout for picture book: text/ font etc; • Design book cover; • Design advert for claymation.

Ceramics
• Exploring the possibilities of clay. • Creating sculptural forms in 3D.

Construction
• Design and build set for Claymation; • Design and build props.

Digital Media
• Photography • Digital painting apps • Creating and editing with sound • Creating and embedding QR codes • Presenting digital and traditional artwork though personal portfolio website.

Curriculum Art in Primary Education
• Planning an art project for the primary classroom; • Integrating art with other curriculum areas.
