Description Drawing on their experience of School Placement and of previous art modules, in Module Five students focus on art education in the classroom and in a whole school context. Students work on a personal art project of their choice during this module. Building on their theoretical and practical knowledge of teaching art, they plan art projects and create exemplars for teaching art in primary classrooms. Where possible, practice in the classroom forms part of this placement. In preparation for subject leadership students study class and whole-school art planning, art assessment, art trips, exhibitions of art work and assessing art education resources such as art books, art education websites and gallery art programmes for children. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate enjoyment of the process of art-making by designing and creating a variety of artworks in a choice of media including print, fabric and fibre, construction, modelling and drawing, paint and colour and digital media with a view to adapting these projects for use in primary classrooms. 2. Demonstrate, with reference to art education literature, understanding, knowledge, critical reflection and analysis of the role of art in education and the role of a subject leader within the school. 3. Critically evaluate the work of artists historical and contemporary and explore their possibilities to inspire art-making at all levels. 4. Plan, teach and assess imaginative and engaging activities for children’s learning in visual art with a view to creative and meaningful art-making and progression. 5. Work individually and cooperatively on chosen art projects. 6. Create an exhibition display of 2/3 selected art pieces from their Art Major, with due attention to preparing rationale, and mounting, framing, layout and overall design. Learning Activities Personal art project• Choice of personal art project based on previous art modules or students own preference for example (Environmental Art, Animation, Claymation, Print project, working with clay/ papier mâché/ fabric and fibre, Book project, Silk –screen, Batik, Cartoons, Masks, Crazy hats, Accessories, Portraiture). • Students engage in personal art project: research theme, consult the work of artists, make preparatory sketches, experiment with media and work on art piece. • Process and reflections recorded in art journal.Creative Art Teaching• In pairs, students plan an art project for a primary class (Junior/ Senior); • Classroom practice: In pairs, teach art project in a primary classroom .Assessment• Suitable assessment methods in art education at primary level; • Practical assessment of children’s art in the classroom.Evaluating art education resources• Art education websites; • Art books; • Art gallery educational programmes/ art trails.
