Description The purpose of this module is to provide incoming Ph.D students with a range of workshops, presentations and assignments that will aid in their progression through the Ph.D process within the School of Biotechnology. Students will gain transferrable skills such as laboratory safety, record keeping, utilisation of basic software packages and gaining knowledge from seminars/the literature. Students will learn the specific standard operating procedures in relation to working with biological/chemical hazardous materials and genetically modified organisms as they operate in Biotechnology. Students will also learn best practice in relation to laboratory note-taking, sample storage and email etiquette. Attendance at Biotechnology related lectures/seminars and associated assignments, will highlight to students the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to research and the role of other researchers and industry in their research education. Interactions with their supervisor, multiple academic and technical staff, their peers and researchers outside the School/DCU will provide students with the local network and basic postgraduate skills to enhance their Ph.D experience. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
