Description

There are two distinct components to this module - (i) Christian Foundations with an emphasis on scripture and (ii) Religious Diversity. Christian Foundations is taught in Semester 1 and Religious Diversity is taught in Semester 2.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify some of the books and types of literature that compose Sacred Scripture and be able to set them in broader literary and historical contexts.
2. Appreciate the significance of some key stories and events in the Judaeo-Christian scriptures and to explore different pedagogies and resources useful for teaching them to children.
3. Become familiar with some critical techniques when studying a biblical text.
4. Develop their own understanding and to appreciate some biblical portraits of God and Jesus Christ.
5. Understand the basic story and vision of Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam.
6. Define religious diversity and pluralism in the context of interreligious dialogue
7. Develop appropriate reflective skills around personal, cultural and religious diversity.
8. Reflect upon religious diversity in the context of religious education and intercultural education.
9. Understanding the foundations of Christian Faith and the relationship between faith and reason

Introduction to the Bible

The Hebrew Scriptures - overview of books and literary genres. The Bible as a love story. Genesis-The Creation Story.

Exodus- the story of a People and a covenant or relationship of love.

Strong women in the Bible. Beautiful and difficult sayings.

Introduction to the New Testament. The New Covenant. An overview of books and the stories of Jesus.

The Formation of the Gospels and the literary genres of the New Testament.

Jesus as a baby - The Infancy Narratives and the early life of Jesus.

The person of Jesus. Miracle Stories and parables - The Character of Jesus.

Easter-The Passion and the Resurrection in the Gospels.

What is Religious Diversity and Pluralism?

Culture and religious meaning-making

Biblical foundations from a Christian perspective.

Religious and cultural pluralism.

The story and vision of (i) Islam, (ii) Judaism (iii) Hinduism, (iv) Buddhism.

Encounter and dialogue with different religions and belief systems.

Strategies/principles for inclusivity in Irish primary schools—Intercultural education
