This module will take participants through the components of innovation systems and better their understanding of what elements and characteristics are required within policies, plans and strategies to spur economic growth in their countries. At the organisational and government level participants will learn how innovation is linked to positive changes in efficiency, productivity, quality and competitiveness. On completion of the course participants will be empowered to act as innovation champions in their oganisations, providing advice and practical support in the development of their organisation and appropriate public policies on science, technology and innovation (STI) in their countries.

Learning Outcomes

1. distinguish between different conceptual issues on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), and how these are related to the concept of knowledge society
2. develop and provide advice to their governments on issues related to STI policies
3. develop and implement innovation related projects in their organisations.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Concepts of Science, Technology and Innovation
• To introduce participants to the key conceptual issues related to Science, Technology and Innovation and clarify the interrelationships between science, technology and innovation

Concept of national systems of innovation (NSI)
• To enable participants to appreciate the context specificity of innovation by introducing them to the concept of national systems of innovation (NSI)

Evidence based policy making for the development of STI
• To inspire participants with appropriate policies and practices in relation to innovation by introducing them to the need for evidence based policy making for the development of STI in their countries

Agents of Change
• To prepare participants to become agents of change in their countries by enhancing their understanding of STI concepts

Develop leadership skills
• To develop participants’ leadership skills so that they can affect change in their organisations and societies.
