Description

This module, conducted in the target language, is aimed at advanced learners who wish to further develop their writing, oral and analytical skills for academic purposes. Learners work with texts on current affairs from the target language media. They learn to understand and summarise them and produce a critical analysis while gaining accuracy and fluency on linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic competences. Learners explore and develop writing techniques through specific writing activities in the target language with a view to improving fluency, accuracy and range of expression in written production in the target language. The module also helps students to further develop their oral communication skills, both in terms of spoken production and interaction.

Learning Outcomes

1. 1. Extract information, ideas and opinions from a wide range of written registers drawn from a variety of sources (for example journalistic, literary, artistic).
2. 2. Produce well organised and structured written discourse of various text types on complex current affairs subjects, showing a controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices in the foreign language.
3. 3. Develop critical analysis and cultural awareness when presenting and discussing complex topics written and oral.
4. 4.Give a clear, detailed oral presentation on a range of subjects and explain various viewpoints.
5. 5. Interact and express themselves clearly and spontaneously in a Q&A session.
6. 6. Show good grammatical control of complex language; occasional non-systematic errors and minor flaws in sentence structures may still occur.

Portfolio Preparation60Students prepare the weekly provided material which include text sources, articles, recorded Voice Threads, Power Point Presentations, Video sources etc.
Assignment Completion50Students submit a weekly Task related to the prepared material, which is to submit in written or oral form
Independent Study60Students use additionally provided material and study further individually by using a different range of German Sources to make progress.
Group work30Students engage in interactive tasks such as online group discussions, written group forums, individual group work, presenting as a group etc.
Assignment Completion30Students work on their oral assignment throughout the semester.
Lecture20Students attend actively online sessions like discussions as preparation for the assignment. Students devote time for individual or group consultations for queries and exam preparation.
