Description This module follows on from, and complements, GY101. It introduces students to the economic, social, political and historical/cultural geography of Ireland with particular emphasis on Ireland’s position and role within a wider European and Global context. The evolution of Ireland’s cultural landscape in a European context is assessed from a political / economic perspective where focus is placed on the impact of EU accession on Ireland. The emphasis in social geography will be focused on broad historical and contemporary patterns of population change experienced in Ireland through famine and migration respectively and the impact and changing concept of the Irish diaspora will also be explored. Learning Outcomes 1. Identify the broad phases of change in Ireland’s social, economic and political landscape over time 2. Recognise some of the processes involved in the making of the Irish cultural landscape 3. Assess and detail the impact of EU accession on Ireland politically, economically and socially 4. Outline and assess Ireland’s experience of migration in both historical and contemporary contexts 5.
