Description This module aims to provide context, information and insights into two of the most significant traditions to have evolved within Ireland’s political history, ie Republicanism and Unionism. The relationship between these opposing positions will be examined as will the way in which both have impacted on the development of the Irish state and on relations between both jurisdictions within Ireland and between Ireland and Britain. The module will make use of key texts and documents which provide insight into such developments. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Learning Outcomes 1. Understand and locate the origins of both political traditions and the changing contexts in which each evolved. 2. Appreciate the contributions of those figures who have made significant contributions to these evolving political positions. 3. Appreciate the essential tenets of both Republicanism and Unionism as they have evolved and in some respects altered, over the course of modern Irish history and understand how both have impacted on Irish political life and on the wider Anglo-Irish relationship. 4. Apply objectivity, perspective and a range of analytical skills in the reading and contextualisation of relevant documents and texts 5. Demonstrate some of the skills required to engage in basic research at this level. 6. Assimilate previous knowledge and understanding to place both Republicanism and Unionism in the contemporary context. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
