Description

The aim of the module is to bring together and consolidate the students learning over the previous 3 years.This module will prepare the student for their internship. The student will have an opportunity to critique and respond to the current trends in caring for people with intellectual disability. The student will pay particular attention to the intellectual disability nursing contribution to health care.

Learning Outcomes

1. Appraise contemporary issues affecting individuals with intellectual disability and their families paying particular attention to the nursing contribution to these issues.
2. Demonstrate the ability to develop, implement and evaluate nursing care plans for individuals with intellectual disability across the lifespan in a variety of settings based on the best available evidence.
3. Consolidate the nursing skills required to be an effective intellectual disability nurse across the lifespan in a variety of settings.
4. Examine health issues in intellectual disabilities in particular intellectual disability nursing roles and responsibilities.
5. Justify the role and contribution of intellectual disability nursing within health care services locally and nationally.
6. Appraise different ways of learning in practice and consider how self-development can contribute to good practice in ID nursing.

Contemporary issues
This section will cover a number of intellectual disability contemporary issues including: Health, community living, work, education, therapy and social inclusion.

Clinical Topics
Care Planning; consolidate clinical skills knowledge; teaching clinical skills to junior colleagues and pharmacology in ID.

Health in Intellectual Disability
Explore health issues current in the literature; care of the elderly,palliative care and care of people with cancer.

The future development of intellectual disability nursing
Creating a vision for the future of intellectual disability nursing

Personal Development, a key to professional development
The student will have the opportunity to consider the importance of self-development within their professional career.
