Description

In this module, calculus and vector techniques are used to provide an in-depth study of electric and magnetic fields and forces. The course includes concepts such as: Coulomb’s Law, electric field, Gauss’ Law, electric potential, dielectrics. Magnetism: magnetic field, force on moving charges, Ampere’s Law, Biot-Savart Law, Magnetic materials. The principles developed will be applied to DC and AC circuit analysis. Electrical circuits: circuit principles, phasors, AC circuit analysis, power calculations, frequency response, resonance.

Learning Outcomes

1. Discuss basic concepts relating to the physics of electricity and magnetism
2. Solve numerical problems in electricity and magnetism.
3. Explain the physical principles which underpin the relevant experiments in the lab modules
4. Analyse physical situations using concepts, laws and techniques in electricity and magnetism
5. Relate the physical principles of electricity and magnetism to topics covered in other modules.
