Description

Picture books and story can be used to support children’s engagement with and learning in different curriculum areas. In particularly they can support children’s creativity, empathy, critical thinking, critical literacy, and engagement with and discussion of local and global citizenship issues. This module supports students to investigate the use of picture books, story and adult fiction as frameworks for exploring issues of justice and rights within a range of global contexts. The module explores a range of different approaches to teaching using picture books, providing students with the opportunity to consider how story can provide a variety of creative response to local and global issues. The module also develops a critical analysis of such resources and supports critical reflection on how personal ideas and values may shape the teaching of local and global issues.

1. Reflect on and discuss their own values and opinions through the use of storybooks.
2. Plan for the use of story across class levels to support children’s critical literacy, critical thinking and discussion skills.
3. Plan for the use of story across class levels to support children’s empathy with people living in different contexts and situations.
4. Develop strategies for using storybooks across class levels to support children’s learning in different curriculum areas and their exploration of global justice issues.
5. Critique, assess and select storybooks with consideration of the perspectives and teaching opportunities they present.
6. Respond creatively to story through creative writing, art and/or drama.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Indicative Content
Students will be introduced to a wide variety of literature including picture books, stories written for educational purposes, chapter books, poetry, fairytales, science fiction and film. This literature will explore a wide variety of themes, perspectives and contexts. During the first part of the course story will be used to support students’ discussion of and reflection on their own values, perspectives and opinions towards teaching, children and key social issues including equality, human rights and sustainability. Students will then explore the characteristics of modern children’s literature looking at: themes explored, the relationship between text, pictures and print design, the influence of branded fiction and the affect of different styles and forms of writing. The course will then model classroom approaches to using story to support children’s critical thinking, critical literacy, empathy and discussion skills. A range of literature will be used for this purpose including postmodern picturebooks, popular picture books and traditional fairytales. The approaches demonstrated will support learning across a range of curriculum areas and with different ages. Students will be introduced to a variety of international children’s literature which can be used to support children’s growing understanding of the world around them and people’s lives in different places and different contexts. The themes of migration, climate change, sustainability and poverty will be specifically explored. Students will explore how fiction can be used to support children’s engagement with these issues and their consideration of alternative possible responses to current issues.
