Description

This module provides a critical overview of global citizenship education and facilitates students to learn through placement experiences. Students are asked to share and reflect on their placement experiences and build tools, understanding and confidence for integrating global citizenship education perspectives into their teaching and professional identities.

Learning Outcomes

1. Plan for the integration of global citizenship education themes into different areas of the primary curriculum and at all stages of primary education from infants to sixth class.
2. Critique different approaches to global citizenship education both at the levels of policy and practice.
3. Engage with professional fora in the area of global citizenship education and select from and use resources supporting teaching and learning in this area.
4. Share and reflect on their own experiences of placement experiences and those experiences of others undertaking the module.
5. Develop an awareness of their own professional interests and identity in a global citizenship context.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Indicative Content
This module includes an overview of global citizenship and intercultural education from both a national and international perspective. The content will explore different approaches and frameworks and also critically analyse practice. Students will explore appropriate teaching strategies for global citizenship and intercultural education at different stages of primary education in addition planning and assessment considerations. The remainder of the module involves students undertaking a placement experience to facilitate deeper understanding of global development, human rights, inter-culturalism, inclusion and equality. This will build on and extend students’ experiences and on their learning in global citizenship education. Developing an awareness of resources and networks in this area, the students will be encouraged to position themselves within a professional community of practice.
