Description

This module is designed for post-beginners of Spanish and it will consolidate some of the essential aspects of the Spanish language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. The module will enable students to carry out simple interactions in Spanish in order to satisfy concrete needs e.g. getting around, talk about daily habits, talking about food, ordering food in a restaurant/bar. The students will be introduced to some cultural differences in relation to these topics.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand a variety of texts that follows a predictable pattern such as advertisements, menus, prospectus, reference list and timetables.
2. Demonstrate effective oral skills in a range of social situations such as talking about your daily routine, food, shopping, a place you like.
3. Produce simple texts in writing on matters of personal relevance using simple words and basic expressions. Also, engage in basic social communication online (e.g. writing a simple message on a virtual card for a special occasion).
4. Develop your understanding and control of the basic language system by completing a number of tasks. Errors still occur, but students are more aware of them.
5. Show awareness of social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland (or your own country) and Spanish-speaking countries.
6. Use IT skills in Spanish to access language-specific resources that lead to independent learning (Life-long learning)

Independent Study	33	Autonomously learning outside the classroom to foster student's language competence. For example participation in activities in the LanguaCulture Space or the use of adequate online resources that support language learning.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Teaching approach and indicative content
This module is gradually delivered in Spanish becoming the language of instruction during the semester. A hybrid approach is adopted, being the face to face sessions the core of the module, complemented with asynchronous online classes on particular aspects that require further explanation. The face to face sessions are interactive and learner-centred. Throughout the semester, students will perform individual and collaborative work in small projects to complete comprehension, production and interactions tasks to develop their language competence in matters of personal relevance (habits and routines and every day transaction). In doing so, students will begin to develop their intercultural awareness in relation to these topics, as well as a range of transferable and life-long learning skills.
