Description

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to Koine Greek, the common Greek idiom of the Roman Empire in the first centuries BCE and CE. Koine Greek is the language of the New Testament, the earliest translation of the Hebrew Bible, and many other literary and epigraphic texts. In this module students develop knowledge of the Greek alphabet, its scripts, accentuation, basic Greek grammar, and the use of critical editions of the New Testament. Students will also develop a working vocabulary of Greek that can be used in future research and study. Students are expected to attend and contribute to lectures, to keep up to date with assignments, and to engage with assigned texts in a reflective and analytical manner.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify and write the Greek alphabet in minuscule script
2. Recognise nouns in their various declensions
3. Identify the basic parts of speech, including definite article, pronouns, prepositions, verbs, nouns and adjectives
4. Understand basic Greek verb forms
5. Read and recognise the most prevalent words in biblical Greek
6. Translate simple sentences from Greek into English
