Module Aims
To introduce the fundamentals of organic chemistryTo introduce the two main areas of physical - rates of reaction (chemical kinetics) and chemical equilibrium (chemical thermodynamics).

Learning Outcomes
The student should be able to: 7 Understand the physical principles governing rates of chemical reactions. 7 Understand the driving force behind chemical reactions and how external factors can effect the position of chemical equilibrium. 7 Understand the chemistry of organic functionalities.

Bonding of carbon to other elements. Hybridization. Homologous series. Structural isomers. Bond breaking. Carbocations. Carbanions. Free radicals. Polar covalent bond and inductive effect. Chemical reactions and preparation of: Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, carbonyl compounds, amides, acyl halides. Physical Chemistry The gas laws, introduction to chemical kinetics, chemical thermodynamics and equilibria.
