Level 2 Credit Rating 5
Pre-requisite None
Co-requisite BE201
Module Aims
7 To develop an appreciation of the diversity, structure and relevance of microbes and the relationships between the field of microbiology and other biological disciplines. 7 To develop an understanding of the structures of nucleic acids and the biological processes associated with these molecules. 7 To provide a theoretical background for experiments in microbiology and microbial genetics.

Learning Outcomes
Students should: 7 Understand the fundamentals of microbial classification, structure, identification, metabolism, nutrition, growth and genetics. 7 Understand the importance of microbes in medicine - epidemiology, antimicrobial agents and mechanisms of pathogenicity. 7 In virology, understand classification, structures and modes of replication. 7 In biochemical genetics, be able to describe the structures of eukaryotic and prokaryotic genes and the processes of transciption and translation.
