Module Aims

To familiarise the student with all aspects of database deployment in the modern business environment. • To ensure that the student has a sound grasp of key database technologies and software architectures and their environments and how these support on business processes and systems. • To give the student a practical understanding of the pivotal nature of business information in the context of database systems and their integration with important ancillary business applications (Spreadsheets etc.). • To provide the student with the practical skills which will allow them to understand all aspects of database management from the point of view of provision of timely information to key business processes.

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes On completion of this module : • The student will have a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of database management in business organisations. • The student will understand what business information is, and how it is acquired efficiently. • The student will have a comprehensive understanding of the software architecture of a major database management system which is deployed widely in industry (Oracle). • The student will understand the development lifecycle of software applications which use database technology. The student will be familiar with the design and implementation and rollout stages of such applications. • The student will understand and be proficient basic database schema design techniques. • The students will understand basic formal processes which allow a database designer to construct a well designed schema. The student will be proficient in fundamentals of database schema design. • The student will be able to design and build basic database applications using a variety of interfaces to the database (SQL, PHP, scripts, Spreadsheets). • Through practical project based work, the student will gain familiarity and confidence in interacting with a large database management system (Oracle) and ancillary application systems (Spreadsheets and bespoke applications)

Indicative Syllabus

1. Introduction to Information Systems. 2. Introduction to Database Systems. 3. Modern Database Managements Systems. 4. Business information management applications of database systems. 5. Development and deployment lifecycle of business information software applications. 6. Design, implementation, and deployment strategies and methodologies for applications. 7. Database Technology skills using the Oracle Database management system (features and facilities available in the system for applications development). 8. Applications development using various interfaces to Oracle (SQL, PL/SQL, PHP, Spreadsheet). 9. Data sharing between systems, systems integration; using a spreadsheet in conjunction with a database. 10. Introduction to database administration. 11. Completion of a major project bringing together aspects from other applications course (MH,JK).
