Description This module aims to familiarise the student with all aspects of database deployment in the modern business environment. It aims to ensure that the student has a sound grasp of key database technologies and software architectures and their environments and how these support on business processes and systems. The module gives the student a practical understanding of the pivotal nature of business information in the context of database systems and their integration with important ancillary business applications (Spreadsheets etc.). It provides the student with the practical skills which will allow them to understand all aspects of database management from the point of view of provision of timely information to key business processes. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Explain the principles and practices of database management in business organisations. 2. Explain what business information is, and how it is acquired efficiently. 3. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the software architecture of a major database management system which is deployed widely in industry. 4. Apply the development lifecycle of software applications which use database technology. The student will be familiar with the design and implementation and rollout stages of such applications. 5. Interpret and proficient in basic database schema design techniques. 6. Apply basic formal processes which allow a database designer to construct a well designed schema. The student will be proficient in fundamentals of database schema design. 7. Design and build basic database applications using a variety of interfaces to the database (SQL, PHP, scripts, Spreadsheets) 8. Interact with a large database management system and ancillary application systems (Spreadsheets and bespoke applications). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
