Module Aims

To provide students with a knowledge of differential equations sufficient for them to understand science courses which use them. To give students the skills to solve common differential equations in engineering and science textbooks.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students will be able to:Solve systems of linear ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients.Solve wellknown second order equations with variable coefficients in scientific applications.Solve certain first order nonlinear differential equations.

Indicative Syllabus

First order ODEs: separable equations, homogeneous equations and integrating factors.Second order ODEs: solution of linear homogeneous equations, particular solutions, variation of parameters, CauchyEuler equations.Systems of ODEs: Homogeneous linear systems, Wronskians.
