Module Aims

This module aims to award credit to students who have had assessed involvement in extra-curricular activity during their period of study at DCU and have demonstrated reflective learning arising from participation in those activities.

The aim of the module is to encourage activity, outside the rigour of academic study and assessment, which is recognised as adding to the rounding of the education of the student in its broadest sense. The activity/ies and the student's reflection on the learning arising will be recorded by the student in a learning diary or portfolio and will be assessed and approved by an Award Board appointed by Academic Council for this purpose.



Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes:

Students must demonstrate, through their learning diaries/portfolios, that they have been involved in a significant way and for a significant period in a diverse range of extra curricular activity/ies which have enhanced their learning for life during their period of study at DCU. The learning diary/portfolio will log activities and achievements and will reflect on learning and self-development.         To give broad guidelines, the following is indicative:

In order to achieve a pass grade, you must demonstrate:

  • Significant involvement in a club, society, SU activity or other extra-curricular project/activity
  • Significant participation in that organisation/project /activity
  • Involvement for a period extending over at least one academic year or, in the case of a project/activity, for the duration of the project/activity.
  • Reflection on the learning and self development that has occurred as a result of the participation in the extra-curricular activity.
  • In order to achieve a 2nd class honours, you must demonstrate:

    • Involvement in a club, society, SU activity or other extra-curricular project/activity while serving in a role of responsibility in that activity (for example, as an officer of a club or society) or
    • Involvement in an organisation outside DCU at a significant level, for example, representing his/her county at a sport or activity or
    • A combination of involvement in DCU and outside
    • The exercise of a degree of responsibility in holding that position
    • The exercise of organisational skills in carrying out that position
    • Significant participation in the organisation/project/activity
    • Involvement in the position of responsibility for a period extending over at least one academic year, or in the case of a project/activity, for the duration of that project/activity.
    • Reflection on the learning and self-development arising from the participation and from the exercise of a position of responsibility.

    In order to achieve 1st class honours, you must demonstrate:

    • High level involvement in a position of leadership, such as the SPC, SCC, SU Executive or other significant leadership of students while a registered DCU student, or
    • High-level involvement in activities not directly linked to DCU. For example, representing Ireland in a particular sport or activity, or
    • A combination of involvement in DCU and outside at this level
    • Involvement for a considerable period of time, not less than two academic years in a position of demonstrable leading involvement
    • The exercise of initiative in carrying out their role of responsibility and leadership
    • Evidence that there has been involvement and interest in a diverse range of activities
    • Evidence that the main activity has had an impact on the learning and life of other members of the community
    • A deep analysis of the learning, self-development and contribution to the development of others that has occurred as a result of involvement.

    NOTE
    Assume that a 5 credit module load represents approximately 75 hours' work, which includes all teaching, in-course assignments, laboratory work or other specialised training and an estimated private learning time associated with the module.

    Indicative Syllabus
    General guidelines will be issued by the Awards Board, but the initial assessment is a self-reflection on learning outcomes which will be evidenced by the submission of a learning diary/portfolio to the Awards Board which will then determine the award.

    Assessment will be based on the learning diary/portfolio submitted by the student.

    All students must also attend the mandatory preparatory workshops on reflective learning and activity portfolio preparation. 

    Chancellor’s Medal: Students taking this module who achieve a 1st classification and who, additionally, achieve a First Class honours result in their degree will be nominated for the Chancellor’s Medal by the Programme Boards of the Uaneen Module and of the relevant academic programme.
