Description

This module sets the level B.1.1 from the Common European Framework of Reference as its minimum exit level. It aims to introduce students to lifelong language learning strategies and to develop their capacity to communicate with peers in a social and/or academic context. It thus aims to develop their confidence and competence in spoken and written interaction through the medium of French, as well as their comprehension skills, while also increasing learner autonomy.

Learning Outcomes

1. Express personal opinions in written form using suitable language register and structures.
2. Demonstrate aural listening skills relevant to the themes studied in class through a selection of authentic video material.
3. Perform effective oral presentations supported by good quality audiovisual aids.
4. Demonstrate language awareness and accuracy with the knowledge of key grammatical structures and vocabulary appropriate for this level.
5. Identify key ideas and terms in a variety of authentic texts.
6. Show the ability to work autonomously and reflect on the language learning process.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Format. The course is conducted through French. Classroom sessions are interactive and learner-centered. Students are expected to attend and contribute to all sessions. They are also expected to engage in online language learning activities on a regular basis. Syllabus. The syllabus focuses on increasing the language fluency and accuracy as well as covering a variety of cultural aspects through a range of tasks, class activities and group projects. Class activities. Students will be asked to work in pairs/groups and complete a variety of language assignments/tasks. These can include but are not limited to: role-plays, interviews, mini-dialogues, language and cultural quizzes, cloze-tests, grammar exercises, written and audiovisual comprehension exercises, group presentations based on short specific projects (e.g. organising and describing a trip to France, presenting a review of a French film, describing an aspect of student life in DCU to a French speaking audience, etc.).
