Description

This module sets the level A2-B1 from the Common European Framework of Reference as its minimum exit level. It aims to further develop students' lifelong language learning strategies as well as their capacity to engage with members of the French speaking community in both a social and academic context. It also aims to introduce students to knowledge and learning strategies, as well as to develop the skills in oral and written expression and in comprehension, that will enable them to engage with cultural, social, or economic aspects of the French speaking world.

Learning Outcomes

1. Initiate and sustain a discussion and interact effectively with their peers and teachers on a topic related to French culture.
2. Create a document for their peers showing grammatical and lexical accuracy appropriate for this level.
3. Employ some of the following grammatical forms: prepositions, adjectives, hypotheses with 'if', conditional mood, and relative pronouns in context.
4. Identify key ideas and terms from authentic French language media

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

The syllabus adopts a project and task-based approach and is organised around action-reflection cycles.
Students will engage in group projects designed to foster the development of learner autonomy and autonomous language use. These projects will enable students to focus on familiar and unfamiliar topics and skills while attending to form and meaning. They will constitute the basis for the Continuous Assessment. Elements of the Continuous Assessment may include: a group presention or discussion, the creation of a brochure or pamphlet, an end-of-semester report, an in-class assignment, aural comprehension test, or other. The tasks are designed to help students in the following areas: a) goal setting b) decision-making and problem-solving c) critical information retrieval d) producing and revising written documents e) expressing opinions in French Students will be helped to reflect on the task they have just completed and on its outcomes with respect to language learning and the acquisition or development of transferable skills. The End of Semester Assessment will require students to demonstrate the grammatical knowledge and vocabulary consolidated or acquired during the semester. The course will be conducted through French.
