Description

This module sets the level B1.1 from the Common European Framework of Reference as its minimum exit level. It aims to build on students' existing knowledge of Spanish with emphasis on written skills. It seeks to develop students' ability to express ideas and opinions in written form, and to foster their confidence and competence in spoken and written interaction through the medium of Spanish. Compulsory attendance: This module requires that students attend at least 80% of lectures. Where a student fails to do so, and in the absence of documentation to support extenuating circumstances, s/he will be required to present for a meeting with the Programme Chair, SALIS Teaching Convenor and Module Coordinator/ Lecturer in advance of attempting examinations/ assessments and/ or submitting coursework.

Learning Outcomes

1. Express personal opinions in written form using suitable language register and structures.
2. Show intercultural awareness by contrasting cultural behaviours and values across diverse cultural contexts.
3. Employ language and use communication skills with a degree of grammatical and lexical accuracy appropriate for this level.
4. Engage with authentic and adapted written texts to the required level. Analyse and synthesise main arguments.
5. Engage with periodical press and master journalistic formulaic structures and vocabulary to the required level.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

The course is conducted through Spanish. Classroom sessions are interactive and learner-centered. Students are expected to attend and contribute to all sessions.

Students will engage in group or peer projects designed to foster the development of learner autonomy and autonomous language use.
