Description

This module highlights the interdisciplinary nature of science and the inter-dependence of all areas of science and mathematics through a series of problems set in the wider context of science. Students tackle the problems within groups or individually and present their solution in varied formats including presentation, poster, scientific article, etc. Specific problems assigned vary each year but they address topical issues, as well as ethical and communication issues. Students will complete a week-long online challenge-based learning activity, working in multidisciplinary teams to propose a solution to a scientific challenge.

Learning Outcomes

1. Search the scientific literature systematically to find relevant and reliable information
2. Demonstrate competence in data presentation and analysis as a tool to support a scientific argument
3. Build an evidence-based argument, supported by scientific data, on interdisciplinary topics, e.g. brewing and entrepreneurship, or ethics of artificial intelligence
4. Compile and present an oral presentation, as part of a team challenge
5. Prepare and submit a written report (or poster), as part of a team challenge
6. Reflect on experiences from both professional and personal development perspective. Students will develop their ability to learn from experiences, by considering what happened, how they responded, what they learned, how they intend to react if a similar situation arises again, and to identify actions that they will take.
