Description

An introduction to traditional and digital photography as a technology of representation in a creative media based environment.

Learning Outcomes

1. Apply technical competence in the use of both film and digital 35mm format cameras.
2. Apply a basic understanding of the history of photography and lens based practice in contemporary visual culture.
3. Be able to read, understand and creatively interpret, research and execute a photographic brief.
4. Evaluate work in the field, including their own work, using professional terminology.

Module Delivery
The module is delivered through a series of lectures, seminars, workshop demonstrations, discussions and resource-based learning.

Photography: Contemporary Contexts
Overview of the photographic image in contemporary visual culture.

Photographic Techniques 1: The Camera
F- stops, shutter speeds, depth of field, exposure, bracketing, Film types, formats, speeds. Light and lens characteristics. Artificial light & Flash.

Photographic Techniques 1: Film & Darkroom
Black & White film types, ISO, shooting for film. Introduction to darkroom techniques: processing and printing. Exhibition quality printing.

Photographic Techniques 1: Intro to Digital

The Photographic Brief
Designing, writing and scheduling a project.
