Description

This module aims to introduce students to some of the essential aspects of the language and cultures of German-speaking countries. Students will be introduced to a range of everyday situations requiring the use of specified linguistic skills. Students will be guided in the development of a range of language learning strategies and transferable skills, such as independent learning.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand short simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary.
2. Understand simple instructions in the language learning context.
3. Produce short texts, for example personal emails, and write short basic descriptions of events, past and present activities and personal experiences, using simple coordinating conjunctions.
4. Produce sentences that are largely orthographically correct.
5. Demonstrate control of the most important basic grammatical structures (e.g. word order in main clauses, the use of genders and cases).
6. Identify basic economic, social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland and German-speaking countries.
7. Source information in the target language, using a variety of online and offline media and contacts.

Practice of skills and competences
Reading, writing and listening skills are developed both in class and as part of homework/independent learning time, using the textbook and additional print and online materials. Topics include family, work, free time, travel and 'Landeskunde'.

Digital literacies
Students will be familiarised with online reference and practice tools. IT skills include word processing, web-searches and accessing language specific resources.
