Description

This is an intensive, beginner-level German language module. Students are introduced to a range of basic linguistic features. Language skills (production, comprehension, interaction skills) are developed in an integrated way, mainly in the context of everyday situations. Topics include: greetings, family, professions and leisure. Some cultural aspects of German-speaking countries are also introduced. Students are guided in the development of a range of language learning strategies and in independent learning.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand short simple texts (including audio-clips) containing high-frequency vocabulary.
2. Write short, simple texts, e.g. basic descriptions of familiar items and situations; responses to basic questions.
3. Communicate orally on topics relating to everyday life using basic descriptions and simple questions/ responses.
4. Demonstrate control of some basic grammatical structures (e.g. verb conjugation, word order in main clauses, articles) and vocabulary relating to specific everyday topics.
5. Understand simple instructions in the language learning context.
6. Identify some social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland and German-speaking countries.
7. Source information in the target language, using a variety of online and offline media and contacts.

Seminars40Scheduled language classes. Students are expected to attend these classes and to participate in classroom discussions and activities.
Directed learning50Preparation for classes. Completion of assigned homework.
Independent Study120Ongoing revision of course content, language practice and consolidation of learning over the course of the semester. Study using course books, online language learning resources and target language media. Interaction with other language learners/ speakers of German and involvement in language learning activities outside of class time. Planning. Reflection. Engagement with feedback. Consultation with lecturer(s) when needed.
Assignment Completion40Preparation for CAs. Completion of CAs.
