Description

This module will introduce students to computer-aided translation technology. It will focus on translation memory technology and online terminology management tools. Students will develop a basic understanding of computer-aided translation and will be able to use one of these tools in their translation activity.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate awareness of appropriate tools that assist in the translation process.
2. Demonstrate awareness of the historical development of CAT tools and their importance in modern-day translation practice.
3. Apply at a basic level translation memory and terminology management tools.
4. Explain the interaction between translation memory and terminology management tools.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Understanding the evolution of CAT tools
Students will understand why CAT tools developed and how they are deployed in the translation profession.

Familiarisation with one Translation Memory tool
Students will gain practical, basic experience with one Translation Memory tool.

Familiarisation with one Terminology Management tool
Students will gain practical, basic experience with one Terminology Management tool.

Development of analytical skills
Students will develop analytical skills while using the tools and will be able to discuss their benefits for translators as well as the challenges these tools present.
