Description

Year 3 of the ALTS and BAJ programme provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the relevant target language and culture. Students attend partner universities in China, Europe, Japan or Mexico for a full academic year. The selected modules are compatible with the student’s chosen language pathway and specialism. Modules can be drawn from the wide range of modules offered in partner universities and are selected according to certain established criteria. Modules focussing on the target language are delivered and assessed through that language. Modules focussing on the second language (where applicable) are delivered and assessed through that language. Module choices and the student’s overall number of hours/ credits are approved by the Year Abroad Coordinator and recorded in a Learning Agreement. This module is taken together with LC305 (10 credits) OR relevant module(s) from Fiontar (10 credits).

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate substantial progress in their use and understanding of the target language and increased confidence as an advanced student of that language.
2. Recognise, explain and use effectively a broad variety of linguistic features in a range of different contexts.
3. Demonstrate an increased understanding of the target culture; its history, literature and politics.
4. Demonstrate a complex understanding of intercultural issues as they relate to familiar cultures and the target culture.
5. Articulate responses to intercultural and linguistic issues as they relate to familiar cultures and the target culture and ground these in both experience and theory.
6. Describe and compare additional perspectives on Translation Studies/ Language Studies/ Intercultural Studies/ or other relevant disciplines.
7. Demonstrate continued progress in the second language (where appropriate).
