Description This module seeks to provide a critical examination of contemporary issues in European migration law and policy. It will focus on the main rules and institutions of European migration law. At the same time, it will give the necessary tools to critically reflect on some of the most important issues and tensions that define the European legal order today: from the assumptions and objectives that define the European integration project, to the discourses on the migration crisis, to migrants' deaths in the Mediterranean, to their treatment in the EU and the controversial externalisation and securitisation of migration control. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Achieve a deep understanding of emerging issues in European migration law and policy 2. Contextualise and critically evaluate contemporary and emerging European migration law and policy issues 3. Understand and analyse how European migration law and policy issues have been approached in some key cases of the Court of Justice of the EU and the European Court of Human Rights 4. Become familiar with literature on these issues 5. Engage in research on a self-identified European migration law and policy issue, to make a presentation and write a paper that demonstrates critical engagement with this issue | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
