Module Aims
The aim of this module is to provide students with a critical and structural approach to theories of culture. The high art tradition of art as aesthetic excellence will be studied and subsequent attempts will be made to open out the understanding of culture in more democratic or popular directions by exploring folklore and cultural nationalism, anthropological approaches, semiotics and structuralism, subcultures, feminist cultural theory and postmodernism.

Learning Outcomes
Students will learn how to reflect upon and critique cultural artifacts and practices, including their own, taking into account the social, historical and political contexts in which cultural practices occur and are understood. They will gain an insight into how the diverse theories and approaches to culture connect and conflict, thus forming a comprehensive overview of the main debates in this field.
