|
To give students an opportunity to develop manipulative and technical skills in the laboratory.
To develop a positive and careful approach to experimental work.To develop sound practical skills.
To provide, as appropriate, some support to the theoretical work.

Analytical/Inorganic Chemistry:
Preparation of a primary standard, 0.05 M sodium carbonate.Standardisation of hydrochloric acid using a primary standard. Analysis of a sodium carbonate/sodium hydroxide mixture by titration with hydrochloric acid.Determination of water of hydration in oxalic acid by potassium permanganate titration.Determination of copper by sodium thiosulphate titration.Analysis of a halide mixture by silver nitrate titration using the method of Mohr.Hardness of water determination of EDTA titration.Successive determination of bismuth and lead by EDTA titration.Gravimetric determination of nickel in a salt.Qualitative Inorganic Analysis: identification of cations and anions and the analysis of an unknown mixture.
Physical Chemistry:
The kinetics of the alkaline hydrolysis of ethyl benzoate.Calorimetric measurement of an enthalpy of neutralisation.Electromotive force measurement of galvanic cells.Equilibrium in organic liquids.Determination of he distribution ratio of butanedioic acid between water and diethyl ether.Determination of the stoichiometry of the Ni(II)-EDTA complex.The electric properties of molecules.
Organic Chemistry:
Recrystallisation and melting points.Separations, including:Liquid-liquid extraction - separation of an organic acid from an organic base;Solid-liquid extraction - isolation of trimyristin from nutmeg.Functional group reactions, including:Hydrolysis of trimyristin;Dehydration of 4-methylpentan-2-ol;Preparation of aspirin;
