Module Aims
To introduce ociological concepts and theories influencing society and evaluate how this influences nursing care.


Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module and following a period of personal study the student will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the relevance of sociology in the study of health & illness
  • Describe the major theories, concepts and theoretical approaches in sociology
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the socialisation processes in nursing
  • Identify theoretical approaches to sociological analysis of health & illness which are appropriate to nursing care in Ireland
  • Discuss how family, religion, culture, sexuality, gender and the media influence our concepts of health & illness in a changing Ireland
