Module Aims
To examine the evidence and principles of care management of patients/clients for conditions relating to the gastrointestinal tract, the endocrine system, the central nervous system and the musculo-skeletal system. To enable the student to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care of the above patient/client groups. To develop the clinical skills required for the nursing management of the above patient/client groups

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module and following a period of personal study the student will be able to: Demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing management of individuals in the above patient/client groups. Demonstrate ability in the clinical skills deemed necessary for the nursing management of the above patient/client groups. Demonstrate an ability to support patients / clients and families/carers in their experience of ill health relating to the above conditions. Explore the nurses’ role in health promotion in relation to the patients with gastrointestinal , endocrine, neurological and the musculo-skeletal conditions. Discuss the role of the multidisciplinary team, e.g. (CNS, physiotherapist etc.) in relation to the above patient/client groups.

Indicative Syllabus
Physiological, and anatomical aspects of disease and conditions affecting the gastro-intestinal tract, the endocrine system, the central nervous system and the musculo-skeletal system. In respect of the above patient/client groups: - Assessment strategies, care planning and delivery techniques, evaluation of care. - Relevant cognitive, affective and psycho-motor skills. - Pharmaceutical interventions. - Multi-disciplinary contribution. - Relevant health promotion issues and strategies.

Students receive theoretical instruction on aspects of disease and conditions affecting the endocrine system, central nervous system, musculo-skeletal system and the gastro-intestinal tract. The assessment, treatment and management of patients/clients with the above conditions are examined. A selection of medical, surgical and pharmaceutical interventions and the contribution of relevant health promotion, for the named conditions, are examined. The benefits of a multidisciplinary focus are explored
